Talent show takes centre stage on Youth Day
19 June 2023
The City’s Recreation and Parks Department hosted numerous events around the metropole in celebration of Youth on 16 June – chief among the list was a talent show at the Eerste River Multipurpose Centre, where participants showcased their talents in poetry, singing, dancing and drama. Families came out in their numbers to support the participants.
Targeted at vulnerable youth living in Eerste River, the Youth Day Talent Show is a special event to attract youth to the City's recreation facilities and participate in the programmes on offer. Hosting this event reinforced the importance of youth engagement in the community, providing a safe and fun environment to foster their talents and build relationships with one another and the community.
A lot of hard work, time, energy and planning went into organising the talent show, which included catering, prizes, security, sound, practice sessions, and teaching life skills.
The Recreation and Parks Department worked closely with numerous partners, including the Jacomous Foundation, Love Heals, the Provincial Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Eerste River Neighbourhood Watch, City Health and the Eerste River Community Policing Forum.
'Youth are our future generation and it's important that we invest in them. Emphasis needs to be put on the talent of our youth and creating opportunities for them to generate an income. The City's involvement is imperative to nurture these talents,' said Ward 16 Councillor, Ursula Barends.
