Staff at Newlands swimming bath discover treasure trove of old trophies

6 July 2016

During a recent renovation of disused storage space at the Newlands swimming bath, the facility’s cleaning staff uncovered a cache of old swimming trophies from a bygone era. The trophies were previously awarded to swimmers and divers for both individual and team contests.

Amongst the collection is one that was awarded in 1904 to a former Mayor of Cape Town, Cllr Lieberman.

The City’s Recreation and Parks Department will compile a record of all the trophies and will assist Cllr Ian Iversen to connect with local schools in the area to make them available for use in their annual swimming gala events. A display case will also be sourced in order to commemorate their heritage value.
