St James Walkway temporarily closed

3 June 2022

St James Walkway closed on Monday, 6 June 2022.

The following sections will be closed if all goes as planned:

  • Muizenberg to Bailey’s – 6 June to 12 June 2022
  • Bailey’s to St James – 13 June to 23 June 2022
  • The City will only close the sections that are being worked on a particular day, and detours will be provided via the road and rail underpasses.

The majority of the walkway currently does not have railings. However, due to high tides and sea level rise, more regular flooding and overtopping are experienced in this area, necessitating the installation of railings to improve pedestrian safety.

‘The new stainless steel railings are primarily installed to enhance the safety of this popular walkway for users. It will be mounted on the concrete walkway edge and have more longevity in the coastal environment. We want to appeal to users to please consider using alternative locations along the coast for their recreational activities while construction is underway. This will help minimise disruptions and ensure that the project is completed within the scheduled time. Once complete, the railings will provide a significantly improved coastal walkway to the benefit of all who enjoy this walk along our pristine coastline,’ said the City’s Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews.
