Section of Prince George Drive near Retreat reopens

9 June 2023

The City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate would like to inform commuters that the section of Prince George Drive near Retreat, from Joe Marks Boulevard heading to 5th Avenue Grassy Park, reopened on Wednesday, 7 June.

The City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate would like to thank commuters and surrounding communities for their patience while the 30-meter long collapsed sewer was repaired and also during the delayed reinstatement of the road due to adverse weather conditions. The road also needed to meet relevant quality checks before it could be reopened.

‘We are relieved to know that commuters can resume their normal travelling route along Prince George Drive now that the affected section of the road has reopened. Thank you very much for your patience during this time.

‘Also, thank you to all the different City departments, who were part of this journey, from Water and Sanitation, to Urban Mobility and Traffic Services to ensure the pipe repair and road reinstatement were done, with minimal disruption to commuters and to ensure the team’s safety on site.

‘This complex project has not gone without its challenges. It experienced delays such as pumps being vandalised more than once, theft of material and the deliberate damage done to the lay-flat hoses conveying the sewage for continued service availability during the repair. The rainy weather also slowed down the progress.

‘We wish our commuters a safe journey now that the road has reopened,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Sanitation Councillor Zahid Badroodien.
