Section of Beach Road closed to traffic due to Strand sea wall upgrade

8 July 2016

Transport for Cape Town (TCT), the City of Cape Town’s transport authority, will commence with the upgrade of the next section of the Strand sea wall. Due to the limited space available along this section, Beach Road will be closed to traffic travelling from Gordon’s Bay towards Cape Town.

Rehabilitation of sea wall

The rehabilitation of the sea wall to protect Beach Road along the Strand beachfront from windblown sand and frequent flooding during high tides and storms commenced in January 2016.

‘The refurbishment of the Strand sea wall forms part of the City’s Strand Pavilion Precinct Upgrade Project. TCT is spending approximately R103 million on the first phase of about 1 000 metres from the Strand Pavilion to Da Gama Street. We have made good progress thus far and have now reached a section where we unfortunately have no choice but to close a stretch of Beach Road to road users so that we can get the work done,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member: Transport for Cape Town, Councillor Brett Herron.

Lane closures

Tthe following lane closure will take effect along Beach Road:
  •  the lane closest to the sea will be closed to traffic as from 07:00 on 18 July 2016 until 15 December 2016
  • the lane closure will be in effect 24 hours a day, during weekdays, over weekends and on public holidays
  • the lane will be closed to traffic between the Beach Road traffic circle and Sarel Cilliers Street – a section covering approximately 530 m
  • road users travelling from Gordon’s Bay in the direction of Cape Town should please make use of the detour along Fagan Street by turning right into Main Road at the Beach Road traffic circle, and left into Fagan Street
  • the lane towards Gordon’s Bay will be open to traffic at all times, as will the side streets – Murray, Van Riebeeck, Church, and Abegglen Streets – coming into Beach Road

‘Road users should please take note of the imminent lane closure. There will be signage in place indicating the detour and I request motorists to please be patient during this time. We apologise for the inconvenience, but once completed the residents of the Strand and visitors will benefit greatly from the improvements,’ said Councillor Herron.

Road users are advised to contact the Transport Information Centre for more information on 0800 65 64 63 or to follow @Transport4CT on Twitter.
