Road safety a priority for City’s Traffic Service

15 July 2019

During scheduled roadblocks throughout the City, officers arrested 138 suspects for driving under the influence of alcohol, whilst a stolen vehicle was recovered in Mitchells Plain and the suspect taken to the South African Police Service(SAPS).

The occurrence of Illegal street racing in the Durbanville area is a big concern with officers arresting 18 suspects; 14 for driving under the influence of alcohol and four for reckless and negligent driving. Officers also issued 10 fines for various other offences.

‘This is not the first time that so many motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol in the Durbanville area. The total lack of responsibility and disregard for the safety of other road users is concerning and we will step up our efforts to bring irresponsible drivers to book’, said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.

During other enforcement operations in the southern suburbs, officers arrested 23 suspects, which included 20 for driving under the influence of alcohol, two for reckless and negligent driving, and one for fraud.

The Transport Enforcement Unit arrested two taxi drivers with outstanding warrants to the total value of  R107 100.  On Sunday, 14 July 2019, an officer stopped and impounded a taxi on Somerset Road in the Green Point area, and on further investigation it was found that the driver had 39 outstanding warrants to the value of R95 700. The driver, a 41-year-old male from Gugulethu was arrested and taken to Wynberg SAPS.

Earlier today, officers responded to a complaint of reckless driving on the N1. Upon arrival officers observed a taxi driving recklessly on the left shoulder of the road. The taxi was stopped and the driver, a 22-year-old male from Khayelitsha was arrested. The taxi was transporting 22 school children aged between six and 13. The taxi only had seating capacity for 16 passengers. Additionally, the driver had no licence, or permit and had four outstanding warrants to the value of R11 400.

The above  impoundments and outstanding warrants follow the arrest of a driver last month, during an illegal street racing operation, with 44 outstanding warrants to the value of  R97 350.

‘The City’s enforcement agencies are doing outstanding work amidst difficult circumstances. I would like to thank the public who are our eyes on the roads for alerting Traffic Services of those drivers who demonstrate no respect for the rules of the road. To put the lives of innocent children at risk merely to increase the amount of passengers transported is shocking. The driver and owner of the taxi should take full responsibility and not  be allowed back on the road. Reckless driving not only endangers the lives of passengers but places thousands of law abiding motorists at risk, which we will not tolerate,’ added Alderman Smith.
