The sand under the bridge had been dug out, which led to a segment of the road being vulnerable to collapse. The City’s Roads Infrastructure Management Department has inspected the integrity of this road and made a decision on the nature of repairs that must be done from tonight,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
The scope of the repairs to this section of Jakes Gerwel Drive entails the removal of existing road layers that are as deep as 400mm. Thereafter the road layers will be built up to the original road level.
Road users are advised to avoid the N7 Jakes Gerwel Drive southbound between Bofors Circle and Jakkalsvlei Avenue and to consider using alternative routes while the City continues the repair work.
‘The City has identified this particular road segment as a high risk area and will conduct regular inspections with Law Enforcement. We would further like to advise communities on the risks of illegal sand mining. This practice must stop immediately. Members of the public who spot anyone removing anything under this road segment must report the matter to the City’s call centre,’ added Councillor Quintas.
Road users are urged to use alternative routes while construction is under way at night. Motorists are advised to exercise caution, lower speeds and pay attention to road signs. Be vigilant in and around the roadworks area.
