Resurfacing of Irene Avenue in Somerset West
22 May 2023
The City will ensure that one lane of Irene Avenue will remain open to traffic while work is under way and that all lanes are open during the peak hour periods
Traffic travelling in both directions of Irene Avenue will be affected.
The City will ensure that one lane of Irene Avenue will remain open to traffic while work is under way and that all lanes are open during the peak hour periods: in the morning between 06:00 and 09:00; and in the afternoon between 15:30 and 18:30 in order to minimise the impact on road users.
The scope of the work entails:
- Installation and re-alignment of stormwater channels
- Removing the existing asphalt surfacing and replacing the old surface with hot-mix asphalt
- Reinstating the road marking
- Replacing and realigning kerbs shoved or damaged by tree roots
'I ask that residents in the area cooperate and be patient with our team over the next month as we complete the work along Irene Avenue. Our teams have tried to schedule the work at the most convenient time during the day to limit the impact on traffic flow. Still, I advise that motorists please consider using alternative routes if possible to avoid delays. Residents in the area will soon all benefit from this new road surface,' said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
