Residents can connect to the internet for free

12 July 2016

The City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Corporate Services and Compliance, Councillor Xanthea Limberg, today visited the Matthew Goniwe Clinic in Macassar and the Eerste River Clinic to unveil the latest Wi-Fi hotspots. The testing proceeded without any problems and residents at the facility wasted no time in trying out the free Wi-Fi.

Free Wi-Fi service

‘I am pleased that our clinics have been included in the digital inclusion project for free Wi-Fi. Our health facilities attract a large number of residents on a daily basis and the free Wi-Fi will be a welcome option for them to connect to their emails, read the news, engage in online social activities, catch up on work or accessing general information while queuing for services.

‘Members of the public who make their way to these City facilities will be able to connect their Wi-Fi-enabled devices such as cellphones, laptops, and tablets, to the Wi-Fi. The basic use of the service will be free. Each person will receive a capped amount of data per day,’ said Councillor Limberg.

Digital access for all

‘Digital access for communities can no longer be seen as a privilege but as a necessity. The City will therefore continue to honour its commitment to provide free Wi-Fi across communities by operating Wi-Fi zones both inside and outside public buildings.

‘We acknowledge and thank our partners in the private sector who have helped to bring this project to fruition. This public Wi-Fi provision is a prime example of how the private sector, government and the public can make progress possible, together,’ added Councillor Limberg.

The roll-out of the wireless network seeks to bridge the digital divide, in line with the City’s vision to become the most digitally connected city in Africa.
