Residents called to comment on proposed permanent road closure in Southfield

11 March 2022

The City’s Urban Mobility Directorate has identified this access point into Southfield from Victoria Road as an entrance illegally used by motorists

‘The City’s Urban Mobility Directorate has identified this access point into Southfield from Victoria Road as an entrance illegally used by motorists. Some motorists use Malgas Road, which is a one-way entrance in order to access Victoria Road, as a shortcut to avoid traffic. They are cutting through this residential area at very high speeds throughout the day but mainly during peak traffic times. This trend poses a safety risk to residents along this road and is causing unnecessary traffic through the residential area. It is our job to ensure the road safety of all road users in the area. Thus, if this means that we need to close the road for six months to see if it results in a decrease of taxis and motor vehicles speeding through the area, then I believe this proposal is worth a try,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.

The reasons for proposing the permanent closure are as follows:

  • Illegal use of the one-way entrance into Southfield to access Victoria Road
  • Improved vehicular safety along this section of Victoria Road
  • Limiting extraneous traffic through the residential area.
