Residents advised of roadworks in Samora Machel

30 September 2026

Samora Machel roadworks until mid-December 2026

The City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate would like to advise residents, road users and businesses in Samora Machel of roadworks along Oliver Tambo Avenue between Jakes Gerwel Drive and Lillian Ngoyi Drive and along Anton Fransch Street from Ruth First Street till the end of the street. The work started this week and will be under way till mid-December 2026, if all goes according to plan.

‘The works along Oliver Tambo Avenue and Anton Fransch Street in Samora Machel will take place between 07:30 and 17:00 from Monday to Saturday in order to complete the project as soon as possible. Residents and business owners can expect some noise during this time. We thank you for your understanding while we complete this important maintenance work which all forms part of how we keep Cape Town moving,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.

Congestion can be expected at the intersection of Jakes Gerwel Drive and Oliver Tambo Avenue as well as along Oliver Tambo Avenue. Traffic moving in both directions will be affected, however flag personnel will be on site to direct traffic through temporary detours around the work area.

The scope of the works includes the following:

  • Installation of new stormwater underground pipes (replacing the current pipes with larger pipes)
  • Construction of additional catch pits and manholes
  • Repairing all sidewalks
  • Resurfacing the roads

‘The stormwater system rehabilitation is especially important and forms part of the City of Cape Town’s Stormwater drainage system upgrades. These upgrades need to happen now while we have dry and warm weather conditions and will assist the system to handle increased water flow, improving drainage efficiency and prevent water build-up when the rainy season arrives again,’ said Quintas.

Please note, vehicles parked in the road and obstructing the roadwork, will be moved or towed.
