Reminder to informal traders to respond to City’s call for CPTand U COVID-19 toolkits

24 July 2020

The City of Cape Town is gearing up to roll out the first of the COVID-19 Informal Traders’ Toolkits

The City has recently been contacting informal traders via SMS, who are registered with the City’s database, have COVID-19 permits and concession letters, to offer them the opportunity to receive a COVID-19 Informal Traders’ Toolkit.

‘As part of our ongoing efforts to support the Informal Trading sector during the COVID-19 pandemic, the City will be issuing 10 000 COVID-19 Informal Traders’ Toolkits to qualifying informal traders so they and their customers can continue to do business in a safe environment, which practices COVID-19 protocols.

‘The City will continue to make contact with informal traders as this campaign rolls out. These toolkits are free of charge for traders,’ said Alderman Grant Twigg, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Management.

Each toolkit will contain the following items:

  •  Three litres of hand sanitiser
  •  A social-distancing mat to remind customers to keep 1,5m from traders
  •  Two cloth masks
  • A warm winter beanie
  •  A toolkit bag
  • Information on how to operate safely during the pandemic

Thus far we have received 1161 responses from traders since the first SMS was sent. We have started allocating informal traders to their preferred locations and provided them with collection dates. I want to encourage traders who have not yet responded to the SMS to kindly do so to access the free COVID-19 toolkits. Informal traders are also reminded to be please ensure that their contact details listed with the City are up-to-date,’ said Alderman Twigg.

‘We are very excited that informal traders will soon be receiving COVID-19 toolkits, which includes items that are specific to their needs. Through this initiative, the City is trying to lighten the load on informal traders, who are paying out of their own pockets to comply with COVID-19 measures. There is no other option if we are going to reduce the spread of this virus and keep our economy open,’ said Alderman James Vos, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Opportunities and Asset Management.
