The second annual Eco Fun Day aims to educate residents, families and environmental enthusiasts about becoming better custodians of their environment by participating in the fun-filled interactive programme on Saturday, 30 September 2017, at the Glencairn Navy sports grounds.

Gates open at 10:00 and activities continue until 14:00. The programme includes the opening address by Alderman Felicity Purchase, Chairperson of Subcouncil 19, followed by live entertainment such as snake and dog shows, fire safety, and talks on how to act responsibly toward wildlife. Children’s entertainment will include, among others, a jumping castle, horse rides and a dancing competition. Delicious food will be on sale.
Over 15 different organisations and various City departments will participate in the programme.

Interactive exhibitions, such as the Environmental Management Department’s ‘Biodiversity camera trap’ game and Disaster Risk Management’s cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) lessons will keep visitors entertained while they learn. The public will also learn how to baboon-proof their homes and how to ‘Be Shark Smart’ with the Shark Spotters programme.

Over 300 learners from approximately 12 schools and groups, for example, eco-clubs, brownies and junior rangers, will attend the event.

‘The Eco Fun Day programme will afford children and adults the opportunity to learn about our natural assets in a fun and entertaining manner. Who knows, maybe there are some budding nature enthusiasts waiting to be uncovered,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Area South, Councillor Eddie Andrews.

One of the transformational priorities in the City’s Organisational Development and Transformation Plan is to promote resource efficiency and security by optimising the use of our natural assets.

‘This Eco Fun Day event demonstrates the importance of partnerships between government and organisations. We need to work together to educate our residents about living more responsibly and how they can contribute to conserving and protecting the environment for future generations,’ said Councillor Andrews
