Progress update on Hout Bay and Llandudno water disruption
17 November 2021
Water supply has been partly restored in the Hout Bay area, however further unexpected complications are still affecting water supply in some areas.• The City’s Water and Sanitation team is working around the clock to effect the repairs of a new pipe burst on the water supply main to the Suikerbossie Reservoir. This is affecting supply to Llandudno, Mount Rhodes and Suikerbossie. Once the repairs, which involve the replacement of a pipe section that requires welded alterations, are complete, this water main will be assessed for further blockages and cleared before the water is discharged into it. This burst was a knock-on effect of previous incidents over the weekend i.e. previous pipe bursts have led to silt blockages throughout the network and created pressure spikes.
• The team is also attending to a pressure reduction valve (PRV) which is hampering the water supply to the Scotts Estate, Baviaanskloof and Beach Estate areas. This required that the supply from the Hout Bay Reservoir be shut down for approximately two hours to enable the servicing of the PRV on the reservoir outlet to be done safely.
The Hout Bay and Suikerbossie reservoir outlets will be opened slowly once work has been completed and it could take a number of hours before all customers have supply after repairs have been completed.
Water tankers and standpipes:
• A water tanker is roaming in Llandudno and another is parked on the corner of Helgarda and Edgar Roads in Hout Bay.
Once the PRV is working satisfactorily and the supply to the Scotts Estate, Baviaanskloof and Beach Estate areas has been restored, the water tankers in these areas will also be sent to the Mount Rhodes, Suikerbossie and Llandudno areas to provide water while the repairs on the Suikerbossie water main are being attended to.
• A standpipe has been placed in Mount Rhodes Drive and another in Scott Road in Scotts Estate.
Residents are advised to collect water in clean, sealed containers for domestic use during this period.
Consumers in Mount Rhodes, Suikerbossie and Llandudno are advised to ensure their taps closed to prevent any water loss and/or damage when the water supply is restored.
The City sincerely regrets any inconvenience caused and appreciates the patience of the consumers while it endeavours to restore the water supply.
