Phillip Kgosana Drive streetlight infrastructure repairs ongoing

9 December 2021

The entire stretch between Hospital Bend and Roeland Street requires ample and sufficient street lighting as it is an important access route to the City.

This important access route to and from the central business district (CBD) has been severely affected by streetlight theft and vandalism recently.

‘The entire stretch between Hospital Bend and Roeland Street requires ample and sufficient street lighting as it is an important access route to the City. These actions affect the surrounding areas, residents and road users, and we cannot allow these actions to continue.

‘Our electricity teams are working around the clock to ensure that the vandalised infrastructure is repaired and replaced as quickly as possible. However, the City appeals to residents to assist us by reporting any suspicious activities to both the SAPS and the City so that we can bring an end to streetlight infrastructure theft and vandalism in areas across the metro. The SAPS remains the lead authority in crime prevention.

‘Between March and November 2021, the City spent more than R13,6 million on repairs due to theft and vandalism in areas across the metro. City management continues to look at the situation to see if any further action can be taken to protect infrastructure. We will also continue to conduct patrols on Phillip Kgosana Drive and other identified hotspot areas around the metro, as far as our resources allow,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Energy and Climate Change, Councillor Beverley van Reenen.
