Newlands Reservoir’s chlorination plants get a facelift

3 December 2023

The City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate recently invested R2,1 million to refurbish three chlorination plants at Newlands Reservoir in three months.

Newlands Reservoir is one of Cape Town’s oldest reservoirs. It can hold 132,6 million litres of water and supplies water to Wynberg Reservoir, Bishopscourt, Hout Bay, Llandudno, Newlands, Claremont, Kenilworth, Groote Schuur, UCT, Rondebosch, Molteno Reservoir, Ottery, Strandfontein, Pelican Park, Wetton, Lotus River, Retreat, Steenberg, Muizenberg and Grassy Park.

The reservoir has three plants, which chlorinate drinking water as part of the treatment process before it is distributed to the public.

The chlorination plants needed to be refurbished and are part of the City’s infrastructure maintenance, to ensure that they continue to meet occupational health and safety requirements. New injector systems were installed, as well as new and improved safety features.

‘Any upgrades to our water infrastructure is of utmost importance to reassure residents of the City’s diligence in providing safe, quality drinking water. It is also aligned with our commitment to providing clean, reliable drinking water to all residents, as described in the City’s water strategy,’ said Councillor Zahid Badroodien, the Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Sanitation.
