A new community park was opened to the public on Monday, 4 April 2016 by Ward Councillor Dave Bryant. The park, located at the corner of Mill Street and Virginia Avenue in Vredehoek, has been named Virginia Avenue Park and will serve the surrounding residential area.
Park upgrade improves community safety
The previously unused open space was a concern to local residents as it attracted anti-social elements to the area and posed a public health and safety risk. The close proximity of the skate park further motivated for the creation of a safe play area for the community to enjoy.
“The new park is funded via a ward allocation grant that was made after I conducted a site visit with the neighbourhood watch and residents a year and a half ago. Over the past four years the City has completely rejuvenated the area around Mill Street Bridge and has transformed it from a problematic dead space into a safe and vibrant urban node,” said Cllr Bryant.
The park includes a new perimeter fence as well as benches and picnic tables. The boundary wall has been beautified with murals and climbing plants. Cllr Bryant also indicated that there are plans underway to establish a Friends group to ensure that the park is well managed.
Get involved
“We are appealing to residents who would like to be involved in a Friends group for Virginia Avenue Park to contact the City Parks deparment, “ said Cllr Bryant.
Volunteers are requested to contact Pauline McConney from City Parks on 021 481 1900 to get involved.
