New fence improves safety at Acacia Road Park

8 February 2016

Residents living near the play park located along Acacia Road in Parkwood Estate now have access to a more secure recreational space. The City Parks department has installed a perimeter fence with gated access control as part of its parks upgrade project in Ward 66.

For years, children from the community have been playing unattended in the park, which is located adjacent to a busy road. This has resulted in many tragic accidents. Now, the children can play safely in the park precinct without risk of injury from passing cars. Local community organisations and schools from the surrounding areas are also encouraged to make use of the facility to arrange outings to a safe and secure recreational space.

The upgrade to the Acacia Road Park was made possible thanks to ward allocation funding from Cllr Melanie Arendse (Ward 66) in the amount of R230 000, of which a part was dedicated towards the fencing.

Cllr William Akim was also involved in the process, and he reports that two members of the community have volunteered their services as caretakers. The councillor urged the community to take ownership of this asset and to report any instances of vandalism to ensure that the park remains in good condition for the benefit of all visitors. Residents can contact Law Enforcement on 021 596 1999 or alternatively contact the City's Call Centre on 0860 103 089 toll-free to report a problem.
