Today, Tuesday 26 March 2019, the City of Cape Town’s Executive Mayor, Dan Plato’s city-wide clean-up campaign touched down in Bonteheuwel.

The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Management, Alderman Grant Twigg, managed the community clean-up efforts in the area. The campaign was launched recently and has achieved great success already. Through this initiative the Mayor has aimed to create a sense of community pride.

‘It is part of the drive as the City of Cape Town and my office to make sure that our neighbourhoods are cleaner than what it was before. Illegal dumping is not good for the health and wellbeing of the community. The campaign is part of an educational drive to stop illegal dumping and littering,’ said Mayor Plato.

The City’s Solid Waste Management Department continues to work hard to ensure that high levels of cleanliness are maintained, but the City needs the help of communities and residents to help take service delivery to enhanced levels.

‘After engaging with residents over the past few months, I allocated an additional R115 million from the Adjustment Budget which was tabled in January 2019. Over the coming months, we will be cleaning at least 20 communities across Cape Town as part of the campaign,’ said Mayor Plato.

‘Cape Town routinely features on lists of the world’s most beautiful cities and is ranked among the top tourist destinations across the globe. The City is recognised as providing the best services in the country to both our residents and visitors, so we have good reason to be proud of what we have to offer and good reason to take pride in our surroundings,’ said Alderman Twigg.

Over the coming weeks and months, Mayor Plato and the City’s Mayoral Committee will be visiting a number of communities and picking up litter, sweeping streets and making sure that the illegal dumpers are caught and fined. We encourage all of our residents to take ownership of their communities and to join our area clean-up brigades.

Let’s make progress. Together #KeepCapeTownClean!
