Lwandle Library sets to double in size with expansion on track for November completion

The nearly R14,9 million upgrade and expansion of Lwandle Library is progressing towards its expected completion in November 2026, with the project set to double the size of the facility.
The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Francine Higham, recently visited the library to view progress on the project. The upgrade and extension of works which started in March this year, is progressing well, with the expected completion projected for November 2026.
Work completed to date includes the main structural elements of the extension, roofing and alterations to the existing library. Work is now shifting to internal finishes, services and the areas surrounding the building.

The next phase includes ceilings, flooring, painting and joinery, as well as a new entrance, signage and landscaping. Once complete, the expanded library will provide the Lwandle community with a larger, more welcoming and functional public library.
Once completed, the library will transform into a larger, modern and welcoming facility for the Lwandle community.
‘It was encouraging to see the progress made. An investment in the expansion of the facility is an investment in a better community and will create more opportunities. The upgrade will create an accessible and user-focused environment that will continue to offer safe spaces where residents can read, study and access the internet,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Cllr Francine Higham.

Although the library building remains closed during construction, library services have not come to a complete stop. The Lwandle Library team continues to reach young readers in the community through weekly visits to Early Childhood Development centres. The Wednesday outreach sessions include storytelling, activities and block loans, helping to keep children connected to books and reading.
‘Libraries are important community spaces that provide safe and accessible environments for residents of all ages, so I am also pleased that the team is continuing to take books and reading activities to young children while construction is under way,’ added Councillor Higham.
Residents can continue to make use of neighbouring City libraries during the construction period, including Strand, Somerset West, Gordons Bay and Sir Lowry’s Pass libraries.
The City looks forward to welcoming the Lwandle community back to an expanded and upgraded library once construction is complete.
