The City of Cape Town’s Sport, Recreation and Amenities Department introduced its new recreation policy earlier this month. The department’s sport and recreational centres are already packed with daily fun-filled programmes for all ages.
These programmes would not be possible without the dedication of committed facility officers and play leaders at the City’s recreation hubs.
Welcome Mene has been a Facility Officer with the Sport and Recreation department for a number of years and has a deep passion for his community.
“We must shift the focus from maintenance to recreation because recreation plays a significant role towards the development of our communities” says Welcome.
“I am passionate about offering a foundation for youth to prepare them for the future, because they will become the responsible South Africans of tomorrow. I believe that there needs to be a firm focus around life skills and more developmental and educational programmes and I look forward to the new improvements that the new Sport and Recreation Programmes Policy offers.”
The Monwabisi Recreation Centre in Langa is open daily between 07:30 and 20:00 and offers a range of activities for young and old in order to keep the community active and engaged. Recreation Hubs focus on activities in the surrounding community and not just at the facility itself. Various activities are on offer at the centre as well as at surrounding parks, sports fields and the Langa Swimming Pool.
The Sport and Recreation Programmes Policy, which has recently been adopted by the City, will ensure that programmes are offered according to the needs and interests of the community and will target all age groups and genders. The importance of sport and recreational opportunities in building healthy, liveable, and inclusive communities cannot be underestimated.

This City’s Sports, Recreation and Amenities Department would like to encourage communities to work together with the City and spread the word to inspire others within the community to attend these programmes and to help maintain and sustain the centre.
