Key link to Philippi commercial district to be rehabilitated
19 September 2019
The rehabilitation of portions of Ottery Road and Olieboom road is vital in ensuring that the Philippi industrial area benefits from a quality road network which can cope with the high traffic this district experiences. This is an important commercial node in Cape Town with two major food retailers’ distribution centres being located there, and Olieboom road being the key link to and from the Philippi Horticultural Area.
‘We are investing in the rehabilitation of this road to ensure that once completed, the major food retailer distribution centres and other local businesses in the area will benefit from a completely rehabilitated road. The project also included new and rehabilitated sidewalks for the benefit of pedestrians along the route ,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Transport, Alderman Felicity Purchase.
The rehabilitated section of the road will cover a distance of 1km. New sidewalks will be constructed in the southern section of Ottery road. The traffic circle as well as other existing sidewalks will also be rehabilitated.
Construction is expected to take up to eight months, if all goes as planned.
The budget for this project is approximately R 20 million.
This project will also provide much needed jobs and skills development to members of the local community. Up to 7% of the project contract value will be spent on temporary work opportunities to residents from the area and a further 10% on attaining the services of local enterprises within these wards. Job seekers in Ward 43 residing close to the works are encouraged to register on the local sub council jobseekers database. Local businesses must register at the Sub-council in order for their enterprise to feature on the list of sub-contractors which will be supplied to the main contractor.
