Incidents spike during Guy Fawkes

6 November 2026

344 fireworks incidents reported over three days

Reported incidents more than doubled since last year, when 156 calls were received between 3 and 5 November 2025. This year saw 344 incidents reported for the same period. The City’s enforcement departments, and other agencies, were on patrol in communities to assist with incidents relating to the discharge of fireworks.

On Guy Fawkes Day alone, 243 incidents were recorded related to the discharge of fireworks.

Incidents of sporadic stone throwing and anti-social behaviour were received.

Fireworks incidents reported to the PECC included areas such as Saxonsea, Lentegeur, Hanover Park, Surrey Estate, Manenberg, Mamre, Bonteheuwel and The Hague.

This year, officers were confronted with the same challenge as last year where groups, were constantly on the move, making it difficult to apprehend anyone in the act.

It should be noted that the actual numbers could be higher, as there is always a possibility that not all incidents were reported to the PECC.

‘The unnecessary disruption, noise nuisance, violence and criminal elements that take advantage of disorderly situations have once again proved that there should be no place for Guy Fawkes in our communities. It has once again traumatised residents in affected communities and has put an extra burden on enforcement resources. The message should be clear: no more Guy Fawkes. We hope that communities will assist officers in reporting the discharge of fireworks and that we will see a decline in incidents next year. We all have a duty to act responsibly,’ said the spokesperson for the Law Enforcement Department, Wayne Dyason.

Members of the public can report incidents to the City’s Public Emergency Communication Centre by dialling 021 480 7700 from a cellphone or via the Safety and Security reporting feature on the City app.
