On Saturday, 20 February 2016 a work party is being organised to clear alien vegetation from the mountain slopes in Tokai. The recent fires have cleared the mountainside allowing for regrowth of fynbos but the presence of invasive plant species is threatening this process.
Fire is natural and both required and celebrated in Nature as it ensures the maintenance of a healthy vibrant habitat for all. Evidence of this has been the spectacular flower displays and vegetation regrowth on the blackened and charred mountain slopes which were clear of alien infestation.
Unfortunately though, the alien plants are also adapted to fire. In the old pine areas infested with alien wattles, the germination has been huge. It is now an enormous task to control this growth - which if unchecked will smother the recovering fynbos plants and compromise the animals which depend upon the indigenous vegetation.
Volunteers are needed to assist with the clearing of the invasive plants to allow the indigenous and critically endangered Granite Fynbos to re-establish itself. Secure parking is available in front of the SANParks offices on Tokai Road and volunteers will be transported to and from the work area.
Interested parties are requested to bring along only a hand weeding tool or loppers as the regrowth is still small. Please be sure to wear gloves, a hat and sunscreen as well as water and snacks.
