Freedom Day and Voter Registration weekend
23 March 2016
Under the Apartheid regime, non-whites were forced to carry the so-called ‘dompas’ and faced arrest and detention without trial if they did not carry this document. This was an indignity for black men especially who worked in an enforced migrant labour system. Apartheid was condemned by the international community and in 1994 the citizens of South Africa voted for a regime change led by Nelson Mandela.
Register to vote in the local government elections
My appeal to you, the unregistered voter, is to remember that your enjoyment of freedom of religion, belief and opinion; freedom of expression; freedom of association; and the right to be educated are the result of standing in solidarity and casting a vote for a better future. Your vote also recognises the sacrifices of all those who fought for your freedoms.
“Take the opportunity to make a difference in your community by registering for the upcoming local government elections and let your voice be heard,” said Councillor Eddie Andrews of Subcouncil 12.
The final voter registration weekend will be held on 9 – 10 April 2016. First-time voters or voters who have moved recently can register at their designated voting station between 08:00 and 17:00.
