The City proactively replaces ageing sewer and water pipelines annually to maintain system integrity. This R4,6 million project is part of the R836,6 million allocated by the City's Water and Sanitation Directorate for infrastructure rehabilitation in the 2023/2024 financial year, under the Water and Sewer Pipe Replacement Programme. The City proactively replaces ageing sewer and water pipelines annually to maintain system integrity. Currently, old fibre cement water pipes, installed in the 1950s, are being replaced on Lawley Road, Berold Street, Leibro Street, and Fairfield South Street in Fairfield Estate.
This work represents the second phase of upgrades in Fairfield Estate. The first phase, completed between January and April 2023, saw 1 800 metres of pipes replaced on Fairfield South, Gordon, Plein, Glenboig South, and Wendtlandt streets at R4,6 million.
Work on the current phase began in April and is scheduled to conclude in August 2024. The project employs the open-trench excavation method, replacing the old pipes with more durable and leak-resistant UPVC pipes. This method was chosen based on the operating pressure, material, and available space for replacement.
During a recent site visit, the City's project team along with Councillor Roger Canon, Ward Councillor for Ward 2, expressed satisfaction with the progress and noted the involvement of three local residents in the project team.
