Executive Mayor Alderman Dan Plato launches five foreign-language Destination Marketing booklets with Consul Generals
3 October 2019
‘I am very proud of these booklets as it is the first time that we have translated our marketing material into foreign languages, and we have chosen the language of your countries for our first translation. These brochures are a beautiful summary of what Cape Town has to offer and are perfect as an marketing tool for key international stakeholders and markets. These are key markets for tourism and investment and means information about Cape Town – with the intention of drawing more people to live, work and study in our beautiful city – can now be easily shared. As an inclusive city, our focus is not just on building togetherness with our local residents, but ensuring that we have a warm and welcoming city for the international community,’ said Executive Mayor Dan Plato.

The Executive Mayor wishes to thank the offices of the respective Consul Generals for assisting staff with the translation of the content into the various languages and hopes that this material can contribute towards building closer relationships with these markets.
‘The destination marketing brochure is one of multiple innovative tools developed by my team in the Enterprise and Investment Department, of which our digital library of stock footage and images is a part. The latter is accessible free of charge to media, trade and industry. I am proud to say that this is a first for a city in South Africa. We are making it easier for businesses to market themselves with free high quality stock footage, improving their global competitiveness. As a result of our efforts to position Cape Town as a globally competitive city, we were able to secure investments totalling R1,078 billion and created 2209 jobs during 2017/18,’ said Alderman James Vos.
Electronic versions of the booklets have been developed so that the consulates can share the information with their networks via websites and social media. The electronic version contains stunning videos and photographs, as well as relevant information about why people should select Cape Town as a destination to live in, do business, study and for leisure.
Cape Town is well-placed to increase its trade and tourism. It is the current holder of the World’s Leading Festival and Events Destination and may receive the title once more as the voting process for this award and two other awards – Table Mountain as leading tourist attraction and Cape Town International Airport as world’s leading airport – is underway and closes on the 20th of this month.
Winning these titles is something which we hope will further grow our appeal as a one-stop location which offers it all: a favourable business environment and exchange rate, a beautiful city for tourists and locals, and the right mix of skills and infrastructure.
Furthermore, Cape Town was recently announced as the leading digital city in Africa, offering the highest employment in that sector – more than Nairobi, Johannesburg and Lagos combined. We are a modern, forward-thinking city and these booklets are part of that fresh and innovative approach.
We hope it plays a meaningful role in further building Cape Town’s reputation.
