The Cape Town Environmental Education Trust (CTEET) in partnership with the City of Cape Town’s Environmental Resource Management (ERM) Department is hosting a number of education training workshops for Grade 10 biology learners. A curriculum-based environmental awareness programme will be presented to learners from Forest Heights, Malibu and Sarepta high schools in Wards 11 and 17.
Learners introduced to biosphere concept
The focus of these sessions will be on introducing learners to the biosphere concept, terrestrial and aquatic biomes, human activities that influence the environment and the concept of an ecosystem, its structure and functioning.
The theory part of the programme takes place at the CTEET Environmental Education Centre at Zeekoevlei and learners then visit the reserve’s Rondevlei section for the practical part of the lesson.
Education sessions
Three environmental education sessions have already been hosted on 11 and 12 April 2016 with Grade 10 learners from Forest Heights High and on 3 May 2016 with Malibu High learners. Malibu High learners will also attend the same programme on 4, 9, 16 and 17 May 2016 and learners of Sarepta High will attend a session on 23 June 2016.
In addition to the environmental education sessions, learners are working in groups of 15 on a curriculum-based biodiversity project and the winning group from each of the three high schools will be invited to attend a nature camp with CTEET.
By informing our young learners of the value and importance of biodiversity, we hope to promote a culture of conservation in the future generation.
