Elsies River pedestrian lane a concern for local residents

17 March 2016

A pedestrian lane that opens on Church Street in Elsies River has become a cause for concern to local residents who report that the lane is being used as an escape route for criminals who target unsuspecting members of the community. Cllr Chris Jordaan of Subcouncil 4 has referred the matter to the City’s Property Management and Transport Departments for consideration.

According to legislation, the lane forms part of the public road and cannot therefore be closed without consultation with Transport for Cape Town, the City’s transport authority. The Non-motorised Transport section will conduct an impact assessment to determine how the closure of the lane will affect pedestrian traffic. However, with strong motivation from residents regarding the risk to the community along with the support of the subcouncil, it is hoped that a solution will be found to improve safety and security in the area.

Current proposals include renting out the lane on an annual basis or installing a gate that can be locked at night. Further engagements with the stakeholders is necessary before a final decision can be made. Cllr Jordaan will notify the community in due course of any remedial actions that will be taken to improve public safety.

Residents are requested to report any suspicious individuals in the area to Law Enforcement on 021 596 1999.
