Domestic violence awareness workshop held in Khayelitsha
24 March 2016
Khayelitsha was selected as the venue for the workshop due to the high prevalence of domestic violence in the area. According to the SAPS report on domestic violence, Khayelitsha is ranked third on a list of 16 areas in the Western Cape.
Victims of domestic violence are often unaware of their rights and the remedies that are available to them. The workshop raised awareness around the issue and provided attendees with information on how to find support to escape their abusive circumstances. The community was informed of the rights that the Domestic Violence Act grants them and what steps they can take to ensure their personal safety.
“I urge all victims of domestic abuse to seek assistance and escape the cycle of violence that they are trapped in. Each person has a right to dignity and should not continue living in an abusive relationship. As a caring City, we are here to assist anyone who requires support,” said Cllr Nomvuyo Mofoko.
