The City of Cape Town’s Social Housing Unit is ramping up efforts to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour in City-owned rental stock. Last Monday, officers attached to the Law Enforcement Unit dealt a drug dealer a nasty blow when they confiscated R10 000 worth of dagga thanks to a tip-off from a member of the public.
Officers were attending to a complaint at Dover Court in Lavender Hill when a bystander informed them that drugs were being stored inside the nearby post-boxes. Officers investigated and found 74 dagga ‘stoppe’ as well as four parcels of dagga. Unfortunately they were unable to track down the owner, but booked the drugs in at the local police station.
‘Drug dealers are very creative in how and where they hide their stash, including crevices and cracks in the pavement, inside electricity boxes and, of course, in post-boxes. So, while this find isn’t entirely uncommon, the quantity of drugs found is quite significant.
'Ideally, one would have wanted an arrest, but at the very least the confiscation left a R10 000 hole in the pocket of whoever that dagga belonged to,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
