Community safety and security workshop aims to reduce crime in Khayelitsha

30 March 2016

On 12 – 13 March 2016 a community workshop was held at the Subcouncil 10 offices in Khayelitsha to address community concerns around safety and security. The workshop was organised as a response and follow-up to the conversation between the Khayelitsha Safety and Security Forum and the Mayoral Committee member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.

The following issues were addressed at the workshop:
  • Public lighting
  • Street numbering
  • Proposed satellite police station adjacent to municipal offices
  • Rezoning of Spine Road as a main road
  • Rent-a-cop initiative
  • Neighbourhood watches
  • Mobile policing kiosk

The relevant City officials were invited to attend the workshop and to participate in the discussion. The community’s input will serve as the basis of an action plan aimed at improving community safety.

Community crime prevention

The importance of community crime prevention emerged as a key factor in discussions. Reliance on formal policing structures alone would not bring about effective change, and attendees were asked to assist in involving their communities in crime prevention initiatives, especially by reporting crime. The Khayelitsha Development Forum (KDF) was nominated to spearhead this community initiative.

Damaged security infrastructure such as CCTV cameras, street lighting and fencing should be reported to ensure prompt repairs by the City’s maintenance department. The Social Justice Coalition was tasked with monitoring this aspect of the area’s security plan.

The KDF, ward councillors and subcouncil managers were tasked with supporting the area’s street, block and area committees and to facilitate their engagement with the Community Policing Forums, Ward Committees and other government structures.

Funding for the workshop was provided by the Mayoral Urban Regeneration Programme and covered the costs of 60 attendees. Further follow-up meetings are planned to ensure that the security plan that has been outlined is being implemented effectively.
