Community event held for Langa seniors

9 February 2016

As part of Subcouncil 15’s annual programme for its elderly residents, a Seniors’ Day was held at the Langa Community Hall on Tuesday, 5 February 2016. The aim of the meeting was not only to provide the seniors in attendance with an opportunity to socialise and enjoy a lunch, but also to use the few hours with the seniors to educate and inform them on a range of issues.

The seniors’ event was sponsored by Cllr Nelsiwa Ngqose (Ward 51) who provided the funding for the lunch. The meeting was run jointly with Cllr Sopaqa (Ward 52) to show unity within the community and was well attended. In planning the programme, issues of concern to elderly residents were identified. The Water Department was invited to present on water meters. Mr Gregory Agulhus and  his team were on hand to respond to resident queries.

Members of the local community seniors’ clubs gave a demonstration of their activities aimed at keeping elderly residents physically active and healthy. The City’s Sports and Recreation department was on hand to lead the seniors in some group activities to raise their energy levels.

The event concluded with a speech from Cllr Ngqose who spoke on the importance of the eldery residents knowing their rights. She emphasised that the eldery had a valuable role to play in community affairs as their life experience gives them insight into resolving many challenges.

The day closed with the lunch where the seniors had the opportunity to engage with each other in a relaxed environment.
