Community-building in Uitsig through youth team sports

8 March 2016

A community sporting event was held at the Uitsig sports field on Sunday, 14 February 2016. Youths from the surrounding communities were invited to participate in a netball tournament as part of a social outreach.

The event was organised by community volunteers who aimed to provide a wholesome alternative for young people to engage in that will keep them entertained, active and away from the temptations of the streets. The community partnered with Ward Councillor Beverley Van Reenen (Ward 25) who provided refreshments and arranged access to the sports facility.

The netball tournament was well supported with local residents cheering the teams on. At the conclusion of the event, Cllr Van Reenen facilitated an engagement between the Uitsig FMC and the netball players to have them registered as a fully fledged team.

"This community-building effort will hopefully go a long way towards assisting youth at risk to develop health social habits and to develop their natural talents," said Cllr Van Reenen.
