City's seminar moves and connects librarians

3 June 2019

'The seminar was aptly themed Move Out and Connect, which aimed to get public librarians to move out from behind their desks and into spaces where sharing information, collaborating with apt partners and enhancing library patrons’ experiences will benefit all our communities,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Zahid Badroodien.

The seminar highlighted public libraries' work within their different communities, showcasing innovative programmes, collaborations, and activities.

'We brought together nearly 600 librarians who inspired each other to try something new and shared ideas on how to improve services at their libraries and their communities,' said Councillor Badroodien.

Attendees from outside Cape Town included librarians from Darling, Knysna, Cape Agulhas, Beaufort West and other outlying areas.

'It's heart-warming to see the dedication and passion librarians have for their work and communities. The seminar allowed them to share experiences and learnings. Libraries are spaces where you go to dream, where you find a home, and the librarians are there to help you on your way,' added Councillor Badroodien.

The key note speaker was Purity Kavuri Matuku who holds a Master's degree in Library and Information Science from Kenyatta University.

She said libraries were engaged in inspiring curiosity and joy in learning and bridging the digital divide.
