City's sale of vacant land in Delft enabling opportunities

26 June 2016

The City’s Property Management Department has been facilitating the development of this site over the past few years and has been informed that the construction of the bulk services is due to commence soon. The tender was approved by Council in 2011 and 17 tenders were received at the time. The property abuts the Delft Main Road, Hindle Way and Voorbrug Street in Delft.

‘This project is in line with our efforts to drive responsible development that is to the benefit of all the people of Cape Town. In this case, additional conditions of sale were put in place that were to be to the direct benefit of the community, such as the requirement that part of the land will be portioned off and subdivided for a community facility which will be donated to the City. In addition, there was a condition that the developer would pay R2 million towards the development of a facility of our choosing.

‘We have also been assured that, as far as possible, use will be made of local labour for the different phases of the development.

‘Our responsible development drive aims to, among others, ensure that private sector role players assist us with the required upgrade of existing public infrastructure or the establishment of new infrastructure for the use of our growing population, without placing additional financial burdens on the City, its ratepayers and residents in general,’ said the City’s Executive Deputy Mayor, Alderman Ian Neilson.

It is also envisaged that approximately 240 GAP housing opportunities will be constructed on a portion of the site by a housing developer.
