City warns residents to be aware of banking fraud
20 June 2019
To check whether an email received from the City of Cape Town is a valid or not, residents are urged to confirm that it was sent from one of the City’s verified email addresses. If it is not from one of the email accounts below, it may be fraudulent.
Our registered email accounts are as follows:
- For account payments and billing, the email will be sent from no-reply@capetown.gov.za or ebill@capetown.gov.za.
- For City news and updates, the mail will be sent from ebilling.mail@info.capetown.gov.za or citynews.online@info.capetown.gov.za.
‘If residents have received communication requesting them to change the City’s banking information and are unsure whether it is fraudulent or not, they are urged to verify the information with the City’s Call Centre on 0860 103 089. The City of Cape Town would not email residents from an unknown email address, asking that banking details be changed. We ask our residents to be vigilant and ignore such emails,’ said Alderman Ian Neilson, Mayoral Committee Member for Finance.
Any suspicious behaviour must be reported to the City’s law enforcement agencies or to the South African Police Service (SAPS).
Should residents wish to pay via online banking, they are advised to add the City as a beneficiary on their bank’s website. The City is already listed as a beneficiary at all the major banks and therefore residents do not need to manually update the City’s banking details. Residents can simply find CITY OF CAPE TOWN MUNICIPALITY listed as a beneficiary on their bank’s website or app and enter their 9-digit municipal account number as a reference.
If residents are unable to do any of the above steps, they should contact their bank or the City’s Call Centre on 0860 103 089 for assistance.
