City ushers in the new year with Minstrels and Malay Choir events
27 December 2019
Cape Town is gearing for a bumper end to the year and the City is finalising the logistics for Minstrel and Malay Choir events taking place over the coming week.
On Monday 30 December 2019, the Cape Malay Choirs Parade will take to the streets in the CBD.
The event will start in Rose Street in the Bo-Kaap at 22:00, and the procession will end on the Grand Parade at around 04:00.
Approximately 25 000 people are expected to attend the event.
This will be followed by the Minstrel competitions taking place at the Athlone Stadium and Florida Park Stadium in Belhar, commencing on New Year’s Day.
On Saturday 4 January 2020, crowds of up to 100 000 people are expected to line up along the parade route from District Six to the Bo-Kaap for the annual Cape Town Street Parade (Tweede Nuwejaar Road march).
These are popular events that celebrate the heritage and rich history of the people of Cape Town and they attract hundreds of troupes who entertain crowds and spectators.
For many years, the annual minstrel events were marred by incidents and organisational challenges, which is why the City is proud of the progress the organisers have made in the last few years with improving the quality and organisation of the event.
The City has responded and shown our support by signing a multi-year agreement to allow the event to grow, and the private sector has responded with the first significant corporate sponsorship that the minstrels event has seen in the last two decades.
The time has truly come for all the minstrel troupes to unite behind this signature Cape Town tradition.
To the spectactors, we ask that they do their bit to ensure a festive and enjoyable day out for all.
As is custom with large events, the City will deploy its Safety and Security staff to ensure the safety of all those in attendance.
They will not hesitate to act against any anti-social behaviour and criminality to ensure the festivals are an enjoyable experience for all.
Residents and motorists are advised to please take note of the temporary road closures that will be in place in the city centre and surrounds to accommodate the upcoming minstrel events.
