City to commence with various roadworks in Strandfontein
13 November 2018
The roadworks projects will cost approximately R1,2 million and R1,1 million respectively.
The commencement date for both projects is 19 November 2018 with the completion date anticipated on 7 December 2018.
Work will take place from 08:00 am until 17:00 on weekdays, weather permitting.
The projects are being implemented as part of the City’s routine road maintenance in order to extend the lifespan of road infrastructure by upgrading the pavements and resealing the road surfaces. Pavements are designed to last at least 20 to 25 years but, with no routine maintenance, they would fall into disrepair long before this.
The work entails repairing the existing cracks and patches as well as the removal of ageing bitumen, damaged surfacing, rutting and unevenness. The affected surfaces will be sealed by overlaying of a new asphalt layer.
Traffic will be managed as follows:
- Half-width road closures will be implemented and traffic will be accommodated by means of stop/go controls.
- Traffic moving in both directions will be affected and flag personnel will regulate traffic in one direction at a time.
- If half-width road closures are impossible due to safety concerns, temporary road closures will be in place and, where detours are required, detour signage will be in place to direct motorists.
- Parked vehicles that obstruct the resurfacing operation will be moved or towed away.
‘Roadworks always come with some level of inconvenience but I want to encourage residents and road users to look at the intended outcome, which is to ensure that our roads are durable and safe to use. By resurfacing, the pavement life span will be extended and improved riding quality would be achieved. Also, forming of potholes and surfacing failures which could have a negative impact on the lower-lying pavement layers are mitigated by this process,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Transport and Urban Development, Alderman Felicity Purchase.
‘I also want to warn residents and road users that there will be a lot of dust emanating from these works and that bitumen splashes on vehicle bodies are difficult to remove. I therefore urge users to work with us and comply with the traffic arrangements of the appointed contractor. Residents and road users should also exercise extra caution when travelling around the area. Where possible, I urge them to use alternative routes,’ said Alderman Purchase.
We want to thank you in advance for your patience and cooperation in ensuring that this much-needed project goes ahead as smoothly as possible.
