City teams working around the clock to repair broken sewer line in Simon’s Town

7 June 2024

The City’s Water and Sanitation teams are working non-stop in Simon’s Town to manage a sewer overflow, as a result of a break in the sewer infrastructure.

The Water and Sanitation Directorate became aware of a break in sewer infrastructure because of the embankment slippage along the Mountain side on a sewer main rising from the pump station near Kelpac in Simon's Town. The weakening of the embankment may be attributed to the heavy downpours experienced over the last few days. The overflow has not reached the ocean. Teams are on-site and are managing the situation while preparing for urgent repairs to take place through the night.

The sewer line is also adjacent to the water pipeline, which is now exposed due to complications of the sewer overflow. As a result the water supply has been rerouted through a bypass to ensure continuous service. The area will experience lower water pressure for the duration of the sewer line repairs. The pump station has been shut off to prevent further damage to the embankment.

Four vacuum trucks will support the pump station by suctioning the wet-well to mitigate overflow spillages during the repairs to the sewer line.

The City regrets the inconvenience and is making every effort to resolve the problem quickly.
