Athlone learners explore road maintenance and stormwater infrastructure

As part of Transport Month 2026, the City’s Road Infrastructure Management (RIM) team hosted the “Fix it with us” outing in Belgravia, Athlone on Tuesday, 6 October 2026, with learners from Regine Coeli Primary School. The learners took part in interactive demonstrations that showcased how road and stormwater infrastructure is maintained. Activities included road repair demonstrations, stormwater drain cleaning, road safety discussions, and educational quizzes.

The theme of the day was all about how well-maintained road infrastructure contributes to safer areas for all to live in.

The learners were excited about being collected and dropped off at school in a MyCiTi bus. When they arrived at the activation site, they received reflective vests and a road safety session from the City’s Road Safety team. The learners were then taught about the benefits of keeping stormwater systems clear and how they can help their households report faults and blocked drains. Learners also received educational games and information materials to continue their learning beyond the event.

‘The City of Cape Town maintains more than 10 600 km of roads as part of ensuring a safe and functional transport network for residents and visitors. Our road network is about much more than getting from one place to another. Roads, stormwater systems, signage, and other infrastructure connect residents to schools, jobs, services, and opportunities. By helping young people understand how this infrastructure works and why it must be protected, we are planting the seed for them to play an active role in building safer and more connected communities. All of these educational efforts form part of how we keep Cape Town moving today, and into the future,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
