City supports FNB Cape Town 12 ONERUN as it goes for gold
15 May 2019
The fifth annual FNB Cape Town 12 ONERUN is taking place this weekend and it’s shaping up to be the best one yet.
The City has supported the race since its inception in 2015 and this year has increased its contribution with services to the value of R253 000.
The 12 km mass participation event starts at Woodbridge Island at 09:00 on Sunday 19 May 2019 and finishes outside the Portside Building at the bottom of Bree Street in Cape Town Central.
‘It is amazing how much this event has grown over the last five years and the fact that every year it constantly attracts the best elite international and local runners speaks to its appeal. The City is proud to be part of such an event,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
Having been awarded Bronze Label status by the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) in 2018, FNB Cape Town 12 ONERUN organisers are looking to have it certified as a Gold Label status event by 2020.
The status is regarded as a prestigious award and denotes the event as one of the leading road races in the world.
‘We are hoping that with our support it can get that Gold Label status and continue to grow. The consistent growth of these events translates to an increased benefit to our economy and job creation,’ said Alderman Smith.
Cape Town currently hosts two IAAF-status road races annually and is only one of two African cities with two races which are recognised by the athletics governing body.
The FNB Cape Town 12 ONERUN is the third largest race in the Western Cape Province event calendar and attracts approximately 14 000 local and international participants.
‘This internationally recognised race again reaffirms Cape Town’s ability to host major gatherings and sporting events, which led the city to being crowned as the World’s Leading Festival and Event Destination at the World Travel Awards in 2018,’ said Alderman Smith.
