City starts with the resurfacing of Klipfontein Road

This portion of Klipfontein Road was selected for resurfacing as it is a major link from the M5 heading into Athlone‘This portion of Klipfontein Road was selected for resurfacing as it is a major link from the M5 heading into Athlone. The portion of road has experienced surface and intermittent base failures, and if we do not intervene now it will require more intense rehabilitation going forward. This is a perfect example of how important regular maintenance of our road network is in order to prolong the longevity of this asset, in particular the roads that carry a high volume of traffic every day. We expect the project to take approximately four weeks, if all goes according to plan and ask residents to please be patient should they experience any inconvenience or delays over this period,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
The work will take place from 28 February to 22 March 2022, Monday to Saturday between 09:00 and 16:00, weather permitting.
The portion to be resurfaced covers a distance of 615 meters over two lanes, which become three lanes in the direction of Herbrand Street. This maintenance project entails the replacement of the existing asphalt surface to a depth of 50mm and the installation of new bridge joints to the Garlandale Road over the rail bridge deck. In addition, repairs to the handrail at the top of the bridge will also be done.
Traffic moving in both directions of Klipfontein Road will be affected as work is scheduled to take place on both carriageways. At least one lane will be open to traffic in each direction along Klipfontein Road and the team will reopen all lanes to traffic by 16:00, unless something unforeseen occurs.
Congestion is expected, and commuters are advised to please consider alternative routes as far as possible.
