The Lucky Star Cup, previously known as the Kapstadt Cup, featured 128 teams from across the country and nearly 1 500 players competing in seven age groups.

Junior soccer players in the under-7 to under-14 age groups showcased their talent at the tournament which kicked off on Thursday, 3 October 2019.

Soccer clubs from around Cape Town were joined by the development teams from PSL giants Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns FC and Kaizer Chiefs as well as the KZN Academy for the ninth edition of the competition.

‘As a key partner of this event, the City of Cape Town is delighted by the talent that was on display at this tournament as well as the excellent coordination put into this event. Events such as the Lucky Star Cup which shine a spotlight on the future stars of this country while also bringing diverse groups of people together, contribute to Cape Town being recognised as a leading festival and event destination the world over,’ said Executive Mayor, Dan Plato.

The Lucky Star Cup has become Cape Town’s premier development tournament and it is where the young stars can hone their talent to become the next generation of soccer stars.

‘We believe in youth development and our investment in this event speaks to our commitment to ensuring that young people are provided with the best opportunities in order for them to realise their full potential. Investing in events of this calibre which provide a platform for grassroots football players annually, reaffirms the City’s commitment to inclusive youth development through partnerships with organisations and communities,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Zahid Badroodien.
