City Safety and Security veterans commended for long service

2 August 2018

The City of Cape Town’s Safety and Security Directorate has welcomed more than 30 new inductees to the exclusive ‘20+ club’.

The staff members were among 99 honoured at the annual long service awards, for service ranging from 20 to 46 years.

‘This is an incredibly special occasion each year, because it acknowledges the many years of dedicated service that these staff members have given to the City and its residents, but it is also a representation of the depth of knowledge and skills that we are privileged to have within our ranks. We look to these staff members to help us grow and develop our rookies coming through the ranks.

‘Just recently, we introduced a new group of firefighters who will look to some of our long-service recipients for guidance and encouragement as they learn the ropes. The same happens in every other department within Safety and Security, and that’s how we ensure that the institutional knowledge baton is passed along. I am immensely grateful that we are in a position as a Directorate to do that and I express my sincere gratitude and appreciation to our long service recipients for their contribution,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security; and Social Services, Alderman JP Smith.

Traffic Service Inspector Inez Lackay started her career as a Traffic Warden in 1997 and is currently the officer in charge at the City’s two vehicle impoundment lots. She shared her thoughts on joining the ‘20+ club’:

‘It feels wonderful, but also scary because I’ve just realised how time flew. I cannot believe that it’s been twenty years. It was in the blink of an eye. It’s unbelievable, but also nice to get recognition for it, you know,’ said Inspector Lackey.
