City’s Summer Greens facility officer uses recreation to bring people together

3 June 2016

The City of Cape Town’s Sport, Recreation and Amenities Department has committed millions of rands to provide recreational programmes which unify communities and encourage a healthy lifestyle among residents. But these programmes would not be a success without the dedication and drive of the over 80 staff members who pull it all together.

The commitment of the play leaders, such as Deborah Smit, is crucial to ensure that the recreation programmes are sustained. Deborah, who lives in Plumstead, is a facility officer at the Summer Greens Community Hall.

Recreation key to promoting community cohesion

‘To me recreation is versatile – it can take place indoors or outdoors and either in groups or alone. The best part of our recreational activities is that no one is excluded as our programmes cater for residents of all ages. We are also able to change or adjust the activities based on our residents’ needs.

'Organised recreation helps to bring the community from all walks of life together into a safe space to be active instead of being isolated in their homes or spending time on the streets. Our after-school activities help to keep children off the streets and away from social ills,’ said Deborah.

‘We would like to encourage communities to work together with the City and spread the word to inspire others within the community to attend these programmes and to help maintain and sustain our recreation centres,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Special Projects, Alderman Belinda Walker.
