The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Social Development and Early Childhood Development, Councillor Suzette Little, officially opened the Nantes ECD Centre today, to the delight of local children.
The centre was constructed over six months, with work starting in April 2016 at a cost of just over R8,8 million. It is just under 500 m2 and includes three classrooms for three- to four-year-olds and two classrooms for four- to five-year-olds as well as a baby area, a sick bay, a staff room, ablutions, a kitchen area, and a store-room. Outside there are two play areas with play equipment, a food garden, a recycling area, and a collection and drop-off zone.
The main objective of this initiative is to provide an opportunity for more children to access registered ECD centres which are compliant with health and safety requirements and meet the educational development needs of a child. In this way, the City will contribute towards the development of a firm educational foundation for children who enter the formal schooling system.
This forms part of our commitment to developing healthy communities from a very young age.
The City, the appointed ECD operator (the Bridges Play Centre), and non-governmental organisation Early Learning Years, are already in discussions about establishing a toy library at the facility.
"As a caring city, our aim is to create a stimulating learning environment that will assist with each child’s holistic development. The Nantes ECD will provide a healthy and safe learning environment."
