The 2016 edition of the annual Councillor’s Legacy Cup Tournament saw dozens
of excited children from Gugulethu and Manenberg competing for top honours. The
event took place on Saturday 16 April 2016 at the NY49 sports field in
Gugulethu, with six schools participating this year.
The City’s Ward 45 Councillor, Siyabulela Mamkeli, started the tournament
in 2013 and this year R70 000 from ward allocation funding was directed towards
this inclusive event.
Bridging the social divide through sport
‘The aim of the tournament is to bridge the divide between the Manenberg
and Gugulethu communities. Tournaments such as these provide a platform for
youth to learn each other’s cultures and to embrace diversity. In addition,
events like this play a critical role in promoting good behaviour by steering
young people away from anti-social behaviour.
‘The Siyavuselela Life Skills Projects, a community-based organisation, was
instrumental in organising the event. This is a good example of the City’s
strategy to partner with organisations to better build on, share and utilise
resources to create a meaningful and sustainable impact on the lives of young
people.
‘The Councillor’s Legacy Cup Tournament exemplifies the City’s commitment
to making progress possible together by using sport as a tool to teach young
people important life skills,’ said Councillor Mamkeli.
Lwazi Primary School was crowned the 2016 Councillor’s Legacy Cup
Tournament winners and Bantu Adonis scooped the player of the tournament award.
Medals and soccer balls were awarded to all of the teams that participated in
the tournament.
