The City of Cape Town’s Sport, Recreation and Amenities Department has committed millions of rands to provide recreational programmes which unify communities and encourage a healthy lifestyle among residents. But these programmes would not be a success without the dedication and drive of the over 80 staff members who pull it all together.
One of these extremely committed staff members is Dean Augustus, who lives in Malibu and is a play leader at the Kleinvlei Community Hall.
Sport key to promoting community cohesion
‘I am passionate about all sport. Sport can be used as a tool to develop self-esteem, leadership skills, instil discipline and build social cohesion in communities. Bringing a smile to the face of a child, youth, adult or senior in the community is a huge reward and our programmes contribute towards creating a safer and happier community,’ said Dean.
Dean believes in providing an opportunity for all community members to participate in the City’s programmes.
The City’s Sport and Recreation Programmes Policy, which was recently adopted by the City, ensures that programmes are offered in line with the needs and interests of the community.
‘We would like to encourage communities to work together with the City and spread the word to inspire others within the community to attend these programmes and to help maintain and sustain our recreation centres,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Special Projects, Alderman Belinda Walker.
