A public open space in Oakdale, Bellville got a new look when the installation
of a green fence was completed this week. This forms part of a fencing and
beautification project which will eventually see Avondale Park becoming a
popular recreational space that residents can feel safe to visit.
The upgrade was funded from the ward allocation, with Avondale Park falling
within Ward 3 which is part of Subcouncil 3.
The construction of a fence on the Mabel Street side of Avondale Park
started on 22 February 2016 and the first section has been completed at a cost
of R57 000. The next phase will see the erection of a fence on the Avondale
Street side of the park. Not only does the fence protect the park, but it also
beautifies the area and creates an sense of security.
The third phase of the project will introduce additional plants and
recreational equipment through ward allocation funding in the next financial
year. In addition, the irrigation system will also be upgraded. The total cost
of the upgrade will come to R120 000.
‘We worked closely with the community to identify and prioritise community
projects. The fencing and beautification of the park will give members of the
community a sense of pride and we hope that, together with the City of Cape
Town, they will take ownership of Avondale Park and help to keep it in pristine
condition. By taking shared responsibility in looking after the park, residents
can work together with the City to make progress possible,’ said Ward Councillor
for Ward 3, Councillor Brendan van der Merwe.
